Ask any good SEO professional what the most important factor is in ranking high in the search engines and they will tell you that it's the backlinks. Backlinks are links from another website to your website. They are so important that you can get a site to rank number one for a keyword, even if the keyword doesn't even show up on the site! To specifically pull that off is called Google bombing.

Backlinks are incredibly important but there are different qualities of backlinks. The search engines don't tell us how they rate different backlinks in their algorithms but from practice we've determined what is a good link and what is a bad link and what linking practices don't work anymore and what does.

A very popular past linking practice was to exchange links in that site A linked to site B and vice versa or to do three way linking as in site A links to site B which links to site C which links to site A. These practices aren't working very well anymore, neither are site wide links, blogroll, blog comments, social media links or really any link that is easy to obtain.

So what is working to get links to your website? Writing content still works! Writing guest posts for blogs or submitting articles to good article directories also works. Write not just one or two articles about your website, but do about 15 a day. It's not that hard to write articles about a topic you know very well. And you should know the topic well if you have a website on the subject.

All this means is that Google is really trying to stop the search engine ranking manipulation going on with backlinks. Google is going to make you work for the backlink now and provide helpful information to the consumer about the topic. If you think you can use a software to make up garbled paragraphs, throw in your link and put it on a blog to get some great article backlinks, think again. That's not going to work anymore either. Well it will probably still work if it's not blatant and you're in a very small niche.
